Does bit and bridle fit matter as much as saddle fit?
Short answer
Yes, improper bit size, cheekpiece adjustment, brow band length or noseband tension can affect comfort, communication, and even breathing. Understanding your horse’s mouth conformation is needed to ensure comfortable bit placement and type.
Real-Life Example
When you pick up contact you notice your horse tossing their head. Check the bit and headstall placement. Knowing where the bridle hardware is landing is important because they have many delicate structures on their head, their TMJ and many nerves, and often buckles can be directly over areas causing discomfort. Small adjustments may make a big difference with comfort for our horses.
It Depends
Bit choice and fit vary based on:
• Mouth conformation
• Discipline
• Rider hands and skill
• Training level
• Dental health
When to Seek Guidance
Consult a knowledgeable bridle fitter, trainer, dentist, or veterinarian if you see:
• Tongue evasions
• Persistent head shaking
• Resistance to contact
• Oral sores
We want our equipment allow clear communication to our horse while providing comfort.
