A Different Approach to Whole-Horse Education

Horse owners today are flooded with opinions, absolutes, and overwhelming advice. One lens says one thing, while another says the opposite, then social media fills in the rest.

The Holistic Horse Collective was built as a space to think clearly. We believe good care isn’t about choosing sides. It’s about understanding the foundation our horses need, through context and nuance and learning how to evaluate what applies to your individual horse. It’s a space where using discernment is encouraged and supported, for both horse and their human. We want to support the horse by educating on their species appropriate care and the human in knowing what that looks like. It’s easy to get pulled into a place where our projections of what we think the horse needs is inadvertently encouraged more than what they are showing us they need. That shift is very important for us to understand, and what our platform is here to support.

What We Believe

Holistic care means whole-horse care.

It begins with a strong foundation. This includes environment & handling, nutrition, preventive care, tack fit, hoof care and daily management. When those foundations are stable, clearer decisions can be made with everything that follows in their care.

Holistic does not mean avoiding Western medicine. It simply means integrating it thoughtfully and using discernment. It means that often, more than one truth exists at a time. Knowing that sometimes an herbal poultice is an appropriate solution, and sometimes prescription medication is a necessary answer, or both!

The modern marketing of ‘holistic’ has become quite misleading and has driven a wedge between wellness camps. The question shouldn’t be ‘which side to choose’. The question just is: What does this horse need, in this moment, based on the full picture?

Before injecting a young performance horse, we first come back to our foundation, by asking:

  • Is their environment & lifestyle species appropriate?

  • Is their nutrition balanced?

  • Is their handling supporting soundness and safety?

  • Are we responding to compensation instead of cause?

It’s not - “we don’t inject” … it’s, “why are we injecting”?

From there, addressing the root of an issue can come with more clarity as we assess more nuanced or complex interventions.

We also believe no single lens explains the whole horse. That’s why we have professional consultants and bring in industry leaders, from topics within foundational care to specialized disciplines, so horse owners can hear different perspectives, deepen their understanding, and decide what fits their horse and their stage of care.

Whether you’re refining the basics or navigating a complex situation, our goal remains the same; support thoughtful, informed decisions that lead to better care.
