Why does terrain matter so much?

Short answer

Footing changes load distribution which impacts soft tissue and provides a great amount of proprioceptive feedback. Hard rocky ground, deep sand, mountainous terrain, and mud all influence hoof wear, muscle development and training.

Real-Life Example

A horse lives on soft, level pasture but you begin training in deep arena footing. Without gradual adaptation, tendons and suspensory structures may be overloaded. Environment shifts require conditioning shifts.

It Depends

Impact varies with:

• Hoof health and protection
• Conditioning level
• Trim balance
• Duration of work
• Surface depth of footing

When to Seek Guidance

Contact your veterinarian if you notice:

• Increased stumbling
• Heat in lower limbs
• Post-work stiffness

Reassess surface and intensity of workload before continuing on.
